Oxygen, Exercise, and Yoga:

Your ability to use oxygen when your body is working at its maximum directly relates to the number of calories you burn. If you use lots of oxygen when you practice yoga you are by definition using lots of calories… As the body’s ability to use oxygen improves, physical fitness increases.

Having a high rate of oxygen uptake means:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Better heat regulation
  • Stronger tendons and ligaments
  • Thicker cartilage
  • Larger muscles
  • Greater blood volume
  • More hemoglobin
  • Less body fat denser bones more efficient lungs
  • Heart pumps more blood with each stroke more oxygen extracted from blood
  • more capillaries
  • lower heart rate

Why the Heat:

Heat is to Yoga what the Philosopher’s Stone is to Alchemy.

Alchemists believed the Philosopher’s Stone to be a mysterious, unknown substance that could transmute base metals to gold. They also believed an elixir derived from “the stone” could perfect the human soul, cure illness, prolong life, and bring about spiritual revitalization.

Although yoga and heat are not unknown quantities, they do combine remarkably in practice. Heat is the ingredient that makes the elixir of yoga into a powerful source of transformation: spiritual renewal, longevity, health, and the quest for physical perfection.

We believe the application of heat in Hot Yoga to be treated like the welcomed aid of a generous friend and ally. Something that is accepted with appreciation, but not something that is given with such intensity it becomes counterproductive and oppressive. Help is something that is best given in measure. And like heat, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.
